Southbound out of Silverton. With the Aspens just starting to pop on the nearby hillsides, D&RGW #478 leaves Silverton, Colorado with a mixed train bound for Durango. The 478 is one of three remaining Alco K-28s, from the original group of 10, all of which are now owned by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. For the past dozen years or so, the 473 and 478 have been the "runners", while the 476 has been on static display inside the D&SNG Museum. Although the 476 is restorable, it is currently being held in reserve. With 4 active K-36s and 2 K-28s, the railroad has ample power available to handle its very active schedule.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
