The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway,in Wales, opened in 1896,linking the town with the summit of Constitution Hill,a popular holiday spot for Victorians, with its splendid views of the West Wales coastline. The railway worked on a water balance system until 1921,when it was electrified.Designed by George Croydon Marks, the railway rises 130 metres in its 230 metre length - a gradient of over 50%.The railway was once the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain, but has now been overtaken in that claim by the Cairngorm Railway,in Scotland.
