Remarks & Notes |
On display in downtown Paducah is Mikado 1518 that IC donated to the city in 1963. The 50 plus years on static display has faded the paint a bit but overall things don't look too bad. The locomotive sits next to the flood control wall that was put up in the late 30's to protect the city after the earthen levee proved to be insufficient during the flood of 1937. The wall provides the canvas for over 50 murals each depicting a scene of local history. The murals nearest the locomotive show Paducah as the "Atomic City". In 1951 the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission started work on a new Uranium enrichment facility near the city. Today its products are used for energy purposes and it is the only facility of its type operating in the country. |
