Remarks & Notes |
18-619, with the help of three of her classmates, is heading this heavy coal train down through the steep and very twisty section around Boughton / Boughton Station on the way down to Pietermaritzburg from Cedara. The section between Cedara and Pietermaritzburg is particularly difficult for trains working down to the east coast city of Durban. There is just 16 kilometers between the two places (as the crow flies), but the terrain between the two involves a difference in altitude of just over 600 meters. The required drop in altitude is achieved firstly via the Cedara Tunnel/s (6.8 kilometers long and currently the second longest tunnel/s in South Africa), and then by a series of tight turn backs / loops and steep gradient drops through the Boughton area. |
