Remarks & Notes
This Denver and Rio Grande depot, one of only a few remaining examples of the 19th century style small, stone depots, was built in 1875 and served as both a passenger and freight depot for the then small town of Littleton, Colorado. As improved roads made car and bus travel more convenient, the use of the depot for passenger travel ceased in 1967, and the depot closed completely when freight services ended in 1982. Even though the D&RG depot was designated a "Landmark" by the City of Littleton, it was threatened with demolition until it was moved in 1984 to its current location, where it once again serves as a station for passengers riding the Regional Transportation District’s southwest light rail corridor that connects with downtown Denver. It is amazing that after 140 years, a different form of passenger rail service (light rail) saved this architecturally significant railroad structure.
