Southern Pacific's Denver to Oakland Forwarder rolls west through rural Riverton with 53 loads of beer and piggyback trailers on August 3, 1994. The shoreline of historic Lake Bonneville is visible along Traverse Mountain above the train. More than 1,000 ft deep and covering 19,691 square miles, the pluvial lake encompassed the eastern part of North America's Great Basin region including present-day Utah, and parts of Idaho and Nevada. Formed about 32,000 years ago, Lake Bonneville existed until about 14,500 years ago when a large portion of the lake was released through the Red Rock Pass in Idaho.
