Twenty years ago, Motive Power Industries in Boise, Idaho had ambitious plans to enter the locomotive market. On their maiden voyage from Boise to Southern Pacific rails in Ogden, MPI MK5000C units 501, 502, and 503 arrive on Union Pacific's Hinkle to Yermo train at 30th Street on Sept. 17, 1994. Only six MK5000Cs were built, and three of them were dressed in SP speed lettering. All six continue to serve today on the Utah Railway minus the Caterpillar power plants with EMD replacements.
