A CNW SD45 from its last order and an SD40 bend around the frozen shore of Dells Pond, part of the Chippewa River on a frigid February day in 1972. The train has just left Altoona, passed by the Eau Claire depot and is still occupying Yukon Junction, a wye connection with the Chicago-Twin Cities mainline in Eau Claire. It will change crews in Spooner before completing its journey to Itasca Yard on Superior, Wisconsin's east end. Much of the northbound traffic on this line was empties, including pulpwood gondolas and a large a mount of lumber cars returning to the CN via Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific.
