With its structural engineering wonderfully exposed, the George Washington Bridge forms a backdrop for Amtrak's Empire Service as it makes its way south along the Hudson River in the northern reaches of Manhattan. When the bridge was constructed in 1931, the original intent was to cover the towers with a facade of granite. Fortunately, depression-era cost cutting measures nixed that idea such that we have been left with the beautifully distinctive structure we have today. |
