In 1965/66, the South African Railways (SAR) imported sixty five type U20C diesels from General Electric in the USA. These veteran locomotives have now all been withdrawn from service, but some have found a new lease on life with a variety of operators. This example in primer paint is sitting outside the Transnet Engineering workshops at Koedoespoort in Pretoria, where it has been completely overhauled for sale to Trans Namib in Namibia. A roof mounted air conditioner has been added during the overhaul. Trans Namib's blue livery is visible around the headlight and windows. Taken with permission during a Railway Society of Southern Africa group visit.
