Between 1953 and 1954, the Denver & Rio Grande Western took delivery of 200 GS (General Service) gondolas from General American. The 46 foot and 70 ton drop bottom cars were utilized initially in coal train service, moving to other uses such as sugar beets, scrap, and limestone when the D&RGW took delivery of new three and four bay hopper cars in the 1960s. DRGW B72577 (B = Sugar Beet) managed to survive into the active SP roster in work train service some 43 years after it was built. The B72577 was spotted at Soldier Summit along the south shoulder of Highway 6 on the tail end of the wye once used to turn helper engines.
