Chicago & North Western train 703 is ready to depart the ex-Minneapolis & St. Louis Cedar Lake Yard in Minneapolis on the night of Dec. 27, 1977. This was in the days you could walk in the yard and shoot, and the crew just waved as I popped off flashbulbs. Interestingly, C&NW had gotten rid of all the M&StL's Fs in the 1960s after their merger, but the CGW merger in 1968 brought back F units. 20 units were rebuilt at Oelwein in the 1970s, and these ended up surviving after North Western purged most Fs from the roster in 1976.
