After storms damaged the line between Columbus and Birmingham in the mid-90s, NS rerouted traffic via Atlanta. After repairing the damage, NS decided to make the detours permanent, leaving just a pair of long-distance locals (345/346) on the former CofG main. As the were the only trains on the line, they sometimes ran pretty long, requiring 3 units, as on this summer day in 1996. The detours ended a few months later and things returned to normal on the ex-CofG.
