When a friend had asked me to join him trackside on a beautiful Saturday morning in upstate New York, I said yes with little hesitation as we set out for a day around the Bear Mountain area. After spending some time along CSX's River Subdivision, another friend called me informing us that an empty garbage train had outlawed in Croton Yard the night before and would be heading down the Hudson Line later that day. Although local freight operations on the Hudson Line are not uncommon during daylight hours, the road trains run almost exclusively at night. We spent a good portion of the day waiting on this train as passenger trains took priority over the empty freight. Once passenger traffic slowed, the B949 was given permission to head South out of Croton Yard to complete this trains long journey to the Bronx.
