Remarks & Notes |
The daily garbage trains sit quietly at Oak Point Yard in the South Bronx as they wait for the overnight lull in Metro-North's commuter train schedule along the Hudson Line. The small window will allow CSX to move the trains along the Oak Point Link to the Hudson Line and then up the east side of the Hudson River to Selkirk. Trains from Oak Point Yard which are destined for points West or south of NYC must use the nearest Hudson River freight crossing – the Alfred H. Smith Rail Bridge – approx. 130 miles upriver. While the idea of building the Cross Harbor Tunnel to carry freight between NYC and New Jersey is again under discussion, the $9B+ price tag makes it seem unlikely. |
