Remarks & Notes |
CSXT 8888 sits in the locomotive deadline in CSXT's Huntington yard.
CSXT 8888 was made famous after an incident left it at the point of runaway train in May of 2001. The engineer noticed a incorrectly aligned switch and decided to deboard his locomotive, realign the switch and reboard in time, that is not what actually happened. Having failed to reboard his locomotive; the engine and its hazardous cargo left the yard unmanned. It was finally stopped when another locomotive coupled to rear car dragged it slow enough for a trainmaster to board the engine, stopping its trek across Ohio.
This incident was the inspiration for the 2010 movie 'Unstoppable.' Several railway museums have tried to acquire the locomotive but CSX deemed unworthy of preservation and it will be rebuilt as an SD40-3. |
