An early summer evening (18:00hrs) at Bayhead, the largest goods receiving and dispatching yard in Durban, and E8091, in her wonderful old South African Railway livery, with her working mate in “blue” Spoornet livery behind her, have just been shutdown for the day. They are two examples of their Class (Class 8E Centre Cab Electric Shunting Locomotives) that remain in service as of January 2015. Originally 100 of these locomotives were placed in service between 1983 and 1985, but their days are numbered now, with many of them having already been withdrawn from service / scrapped - spares are a problem.
Photos taken in the Durban area, from the PRASA / Metrorail yards just North of Durban Station to Rossburgh Station including the Bayhead yards and along the Esplanade, Maydon Wharf and around Durban Harbour.
The red & whisker livery of the South African Railways / Suid Afrikaanse Spoorwee collection. Getting harder to find examples of this fantastic and much loved livery still in service!
