High & Wide
A massive Air Products heat exchanger is carefully shepherded along the Lehigh Line by a pair of Norfolk Southern Dash 9s. Air Products personnel ride in an appropriately painted extended vision caboose (APTX 202) to keep a watchful eye on the oversize load. This is but one part of a several day, multiple railroad journey from the Air Products manufacturing facility in Wilkes Barre, PA to Fairless Hills, PA where final assembly will take place. The completed heat exchanger will then be shipped by sea to the end user. The bright white heat exchanger provides a contrast to the long-dormant, rusting remains of the former Bethlehem Steel mill which looms in the distance. It serves as a reminder that we still have the ability to manufacture impressive things in the US.
