Coming and going at Cheyenne’s west end, outbound 8500-hp GE turbine 15 encounters an arriving extra behind GP35 749, two DD35Bs and a DD35A, a 17,500-hp combination. Union Pacific likes to do things big. The road is giving some thought to raising its 30 turbines, already the world’s most powerful locomotives, to 10,000 hp., though that experiment will ultimately prove unsuccessful. The turbine’s 24,000-gallon insulated tender, filled with thick, syrupy Bunker C, is a hand-me-down from one of the road’s FEF-1 class 4-8-4s.
