Afternoon storm clouds are gathering as Union Pacific turbine 18 climbs Archer Hill out of Cheyenne with an eastbound extra. On June 22, 1965 the big blow is half way through its life on UP. One of two of the 8500-hp turbines to be saved, the 18 will go to the Illinois Railway Musum in – appropriately – Union, Illinois, where it remains on display, but inoperable. Twenty-eight sister engines will be cut up for scrap, their trucks and traction motors salvaged for use under GE’s big U50C double diesels.
