Having passed through North America’s 4th longest tunnel (6.2 miles), apparently the brakeman was going back to check an engine problem. Inside Moffat Tunnel D&RGW 5515 East crested the highest elevation reached by an Amtrak train or a common carrier freight train — 9,237-ft. Now it will travel 50 miles to Denver and decline almost 4,000-ft in elevation.
