Remarks & Notes |
Conrail SA22 has just finished it's work at the Gerdau steel plant and now swings back onto the Raritan River Railroad mainline right of way. This particular location is known as Phoenix and is located 2 miles west of South Amboy. It is where the Kearney Spur broke off from the mainline. Today, however; the rails swing off onto the Kearney spur right of way for the trip into the steel plant. This is because the section between here and South Amboy was abandoned after the Conrail takeover in 1980 and Conrail realized that it would be easier to extend the Gillespie branch less than a quarter of a mile to connect with the Amboy Secondary near Browns Yard. Conrail now operates locals destined for the Raritan River Railroad out of Sayreville. Currently SA-2 runs to Hercules, Mausers, and Silverline in East Brunswick and SA-22 runs to the Gerdau Plant. |
