Some sort of test is underway September 18, 1963, as two-thirds of Rio Grande’s Krauss-Maffei diesel hydraulic roster, the 4001 and 4003, coupled to a dynamometer car and an unidentified geep, push a westbound through Arvada. The engines will work through to the Moffat Tunnel, 43 miles distant, then return to Grande’s North Yard. Whatever the dynamometer car is measuring, it won’t be enough. The railroad is already disenchanted with its German experiment, and within a year will sell all three of the KM’s to SP.
