Remarks & Notes |
DM&IR ore car 40822 was one of 500 in class U-23 delivered during 1948 from Pullman Standard, five years before the Missabe purchased its first diesels. Still in service for CN, the car still retains its ports for steaming ore (the two covers under the number and on the slope sheets). Steam locomotives would provide steam and pipes would be inserted into these ports for thawing frozen cars during late fall and spring so the ore would flow into dock pockets. Later in its career the car had side extensions installed and was renumbered to handle unprocessed taconite (iron ore) from the Thunderbird mine to the processing plant at Fairlane, where it is seen being backed to pick up a wounded sister for movement to the RIP track at Keenan yard. |
