A puff of smoke indicates that former Spokane International RS-1 1221 has come to life at Union Pacific’s Marysville, Kansas, roundhouse, ready for afternoon switching chores. The stalls once sheltered 2-10-2’s and 4-12-2’s, but by this unseasonably warm afternoon, October 13, 1965, the road switcher’s only company is another Alco, FA-1 1643, last used to push freights west out of town and now earmarked for trade-in to EMD. The 1221 was built as Spokane International 210 in 1953, acquired when UP took control of SI in 1958, repainted in 1962, and, along with 11 other SI units, is assigned to UP lines east.
