Unfortunately Rock Island’s jaunty paint scheme on these 3 GP-38-2’s rushing its train west to Denver on U.P. trackage rights was not enough to save the railroad which a bankruptcy court ordered liquidated on Jan. 25, 1980, but it struggled until March 30 when death overcame it. Alongside I-70, Extra 4353 was west of Watkins, Colo., on Feb. 27, 1980 and the colors became known as “bankruptcy blue.”
