Just days before Amtrak Trains 5 and 6 “San Francisco Zephyr” would discontinue running through Wyoming over the U.P. and take the place of Rio Grande’s “Rio Grande Zephyr” through the Rockies, both trains passed between Hermosa and Dale Jct., on April 15, 1983. Returning to its famed route, Amtrak renamed Nos. 5 and 6 as the “California Zephyr.”
