A Canadian Pacific GP40-2 silently monitors the northward progress of a 72-car 932 as it blows by the south end of Taylor Yard at 4:44am during the blue hour of a quiet morning in mid-June. This sentry of sorts stationed in Taylor is likely one of only a very small handful of candy apple red locomotives that will be active on CP's 138-mile long Sunbury Subdivision this day, as the ranks of black Norfolk Southern widecabs have already taken over the vast majority of haulage duties of the trains that ply this Canadian Pacific route daily. Common operating practices or not, it's still no coincidence, but rather a visual precursor to the winds of change that lie ahead. For exactly two months from the date of this image, this piece of railroad as well as 145 additional miles of Delaware & Hudson trackage will see yet another operator change, and will pass into the eagerly waiting hands of Norfolk Southern.
