Just three weeks out of the Capital Rebuild Program at Silvis shops, new image GP7 4517 ambles through the old riverfront town of Peru, Illinois, in the historic heart of the Rock Island. Rails were spiked down along the Illinois River here in March, 1853, much to the disappointment of speculators who bought property higher up on the bluffs, and Peru became a lively industrial center. But on this hot and humid June 8, 1975, The Rock is running out its final years, and by 1980 it will be history.
