The Railroad and The MOUNTAIN. I had just crossed over the state line into California near Dorris when a phone call from Dad informed me that a northbound freight had just passed the Dunsmuir Camera. After 45 minutes of driving and then 10 minutes of jogging from the road with my camera bag and tripod, I reached my planned spot just as the train was coming into sight several miles to the south near Bolam. Late on a June evening, a northbound Brooklyn-bound Z train thunders up the 1.4% grade out of Andesite, nearly 10,000 feet below the icy summit of Mount Shasta.
