A decade and a couple of months after I shot Lehigh Valley train AM-1 passing the New Jersey Zinc west plant in Palmerton, PA (see photo 537880), I returned to capture Conrail train WJAL-19 making a setoff in the Chestnut Ridge Railway interchange yard. The cab roofs of two stored New Jersey Zinc Alco switchers are visible over the second unit. The smelting plant has fallen silent, and the air is free of the noxious smoke that has permiated the area for decades. Today the plant has been razed, and the property is an EPA superfund site.
