Remarks & Notes |
Union Pacific's Durkee Loop sits on the 2.2% climb up Encina (Hindman) Hill. The loop is also known as the Pritchard Creek Horseshoe and Leonard Curve. Leonard Curve is likely the original name when this area was known as Hindman Hill. This heavy 110 car grain train rates 8 big AC motors for the grades of Oregon. The DPU swing power can be seen pushing/pulling hard in the background. The rear DPU is out of sight to right. The UP8249 is a 'New' heavy AC45 specifically designed to pull heavy trains like this up mountain grades. The UP7024 is a veteran mountain climber that likely saw service out of Minturn on Tennessee Pass in 1997.
This area is in my top 5 places in the American West to rail-fan..... |
