As the Southern Railway’s steam program grew, the road looked for larger locomotives to haul longer excursion trains. During 1979 and 1980, the Southern leased ex-Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson 2839. Ultimately, the 4-6-4 didn’t have the power that was desired, and was returned. Here the Hudson pulls an excursion train to Charlottesville as part of the 1979 NRHS convention in Washington.
