Arguably the most scenic location along the Scenic Line of the World, the Royal Gorge commanded a good portion of Rio Grande publicity, including the slogan ”Royal Gorge Route”, and a passenger train named for the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas. Seen here from the suspension bridge that span the gorge some 1000 feet above the river and the railroad, eastbound D&RGW coal train 788 threads its way through the narrow canyon. Leading the train is a D&RGW tunnel motor, followed by four SD40/SD40-2’s, three from the MP and one from the UP.
