Remarks & Notes |
I venture that most people who use this Long Island Railroad car on a daily work commute basis liken it to a jail cell rather than a limousine. In reality, what seems a prosaic piece of railroad equipment is anything but. This third rail powered electric multiple unit railroad car was built by Bombardier and is an incredible example of hi tech engineering. Since it has electric motors for all it’s wheels, it is more a locomotive than a railroad car that cannot move on it’s own. The delivery of these MTA LIRR cars started in 2002 and now totals 836 in number. Car 7829 is seen here in Queens Sunnyside Yard heading west while leading a “deadhead” (empty train) into Manhattan’s New York Penn Station to pick up passengers and head on back east. |
