This view provides a pretty good look at the Valley Railroad's Chinese SY, which has been kit-bashed to resemble a New Haven J-1 Class Mikado...a type which has no survivors. The most obvious change is the cab, which is radically different from the one she was built with. The original Chinese Cab was pretty battered in the Knox & Kane engine house fire, and needed to be replaced anyway. The Sunbeam Headlight and number boards are also part of the disguise. The tender has also undergone some serious rebuilding, and now closely resembles the "Clear View" tenders which equipped some of the original New Haven J-1s. Obviously, there are some details which could not be easily changed on this locomotive, but the result is pretty convincing to all but the most serious rail enthusiasts. The only thing that's left to remind the public that his engine was built in 1989, is the red logo of the Tangshen Locomotive Works, which can be seen on the side of the smokebox.
