Street Running Surprise
While Augusta's 6th street was on the list for the big trip, this bit of street running was unknown to me prior. While we were hanging out at the Salisbury depot on the evening after the big 611 celebration we ran into a long time regular local fan named John who was an ex original NS engineer. He told us about the street running on a surviving portion of the original NS down in Fayetteville that the modern NS still serves tri weekly with local out of Fuquay Varina. Being that Friday was our day that we planned to head off to hunt the Aberdeen and Rockfish we crossed our fingers and headed out.
Low and behold luck was with us, as shortly after we arrived in Fayetteville we heard NS E25 (the symbol for the branchline local) crackle on the radio and we knew we were in luck. We got a multitude of shots of this train coming and going as well as working the A&R interchange. In this view we see the return northbound train waiting right in the middle of the street while the conductor walks up the sidewalk after lining behind at the hand throw switch with CSX's branchline to Ft. Bragg. While this shot looks a bit scary, the train wasn't moving and cross traffic on Cumberland St. was snaking around the head end that was parked right in the middle of the intersection. |
