Remarks & Notes |
Built during the 1920s for a Western Suburbs railway between St James and Town Hall that never came to fruition, this section of abandoned tunnel lies dormant and all-but-forgotten beneath the north-eastern corner of Sydney's CBD. Visited as part of an official Transport staff tour, part of the tunnel is seen here lit only by torchlight. The very northern end of the "St James Tunnel" lies beneath a body of water known as "Lake St James", which stretches for several hundred metres and reaches a depth of five metres in places. |
