Remarks & Notes |
The prime aim of the Ceres Rail Company trip to Mossel Bay was to bring newly restored Class 19B No. 1412 back to Ceres. Here we see No. 1412 at the front of the train leaving Ashton along with 19D No. 3321.
This is No. 1412’s second revival. Fourteen 19Bs were built by Berliner Maschinenbau AG in 1930, and were famous for working the scenic Lootsberg Pass in the Cape Midlands in the last years of their lives. No. 1412 was plinthed for display at Middelburg (Cape), but returned to the rails in 2000 when restored as part of the Transnet Heritage Foundation collection. The loco was then used mainly on the Knysna branch until washaways closed that line in 2007. No. 1412 has since languished at Mossel Bay up until now.
