On the northwest edge of Dallas, Gribble in 1979 is an area of swamps and gravel pits where a railfan is as likely to encounter a water moccasin as a train. But with a puff of exhaust this humid June afternoon, Frisco GP38AC 659 accelerates away from Royal Lane with a southbound freight, headed for Irving, where it will turn west to Fort Worth. The lead unit is essentially a 2,000-hp GP38, but with twin Roots blowers in place a turbocharger (perhaps the reason for the smoke) and an alternator instead of a generator.
