Winter in April. With temps in the low 20's and 4" to 5" of new snow, the Saratoga to Kenwood turn is on the NB return leg to Saratoga as it crosses the Erie Canal at Lock E-3 (behind the bridge) with two ECO GP's leading. A canal maintenance boat and the historic 259' Day Peckinpaugh, a canal motorship, is docked for the winter in the canal. Built in 1921, narrow and low to clear bridges and canal locks, it was the last working freighter on the Erie Canal and was retired in 1994. It served both the Erie Canal and Great Lakes. After a basically snowless winter in the Albany area, April has become the snowiest month of the "winter" after back to back snow on April 4th and 5th.
