Remarks & Notes |
Train 649 from Waingawa (near Masterton) emerges from the Rimutaka tunnel with another load of logs for shipment from the capital's port. The tunnel is 5.5 miles (8.8Km) long and when opened in 1955 was longest in the southern hemisphere. Prior to 1955 trains used a nearly 8% incline with Fell center rail, special locomotives and brake vans. |
