Remarks & Notes |
The 1218 is headed south to Lynchburg on a beautiful fall day, with its awesome "hoot" whistle sounding for a grade crossing. I've heard hoot whistles mounted on other locomotives such as the C&O 614 and the Strasburg's 475, but only the 1218 with its 300 psi boiler pressure seemed to produce the correct, ear-splitting sound. The 1218 is one of the few locomotives I've ever chased where it was necessary for me to wear some type of hearing protection. The 1218's whistle was best heard from a safe distance! |
