Remarks & Notes |
The "Smurfs" as they've been dubbed by the railfan community sit inside East Thomas awaiting their next assignment. These two blue beauties stared out as units for the MKT and Penn Central. The 2048 was built as a GP40 for the MKT in 1967 then found its way into the leaser field working under the blue banner of GATX. The 2046 began life as a GP38 for Penn Central in 1969 then earned its blues as a Conrail unit who would later end up on the GATX leaser roster as well. These units got onto the BNSF roster as trade-ins for older switcher units with GATX. They kept their leaser blue paint with only new BNSF Swoosh logos being added, which makes for some interesting variety in nearly all orange world of today's BNSF. |
