Reagan Recession Storage A downturn in the economy in the early 1980s caused the Union Pacific to store power that was deemed surplus in late 1981. Much of it was stored in the warm, dry Mojave Desert at the railroad's yard in Yermo, California. Some of those unused locomotives were photographed on January 23rd, 1982, in a deadline that included GP30Bs, SDP35s, SD45s, ex-RI GP40s and U28Bs, and even the UP's massive DDA40Xs.
