Remarks & Notes
The annual sugar beet campaign is underway in northern Colorado as Great Western Railway SW-1’s 62 and 63 with caboose 1010 set out in late afternoon, October 26, 1968, from Johnstown for Loveland headquarters. Both engines and caboose were acquired a decade before from Chicago-area steel-hauler Elgin, Joliet & Eastern. The Great Western operates some 80 miles of track in northern Colorado, hauling sugar beets and coal to a handful of refineries, carrying away the carloads of sugar, plus molasses and cattle feed, both byproducts of he refining process. After 1983 bankruptcy of its parent company, the Great Western will be acquired by short-line operator OmniTRAX. The diesels will go to several small operators and the caboose to a museum in Windsor, Colorado.
