The 20 cars and caboose trailing SW1’s 62/63 up Walker Hill on Great Western Railway’s Longmont line would not seem too great a burden for the combined 1,200 hp. But the short southbound grade out of Johnstown is an ordeal, especially today, October 26, 1968, against a stiff head wind. The engines and caboose 1010 are refugees from the Elgin Joliet & Eastern, purchased in the late 1950s when GW was aiming at full dieselization. Both 62 and 63 will enjoy long, useful lives, more than 75 years each, ending up with various agricultural operators in Colorado and Nebraska, The caboose will survive, restored and on display in Windsor, Colorado.
