Driving U.S. Route 30 across Nebraska in the 1960s is a continuous variety show. Here come GE U50 33 and EMD DD35B 72B, a 10,000-hp combination, booming along eastbound, east of North Platte on October 2, 1966, with a few cattle cars, a gon, a flat, and an endless string of rattling boxcars. Not a container or even a piggyback in sight. What the Overland Route lacks here in scenery it makes up in broad, skies, bright sunshine, and plenty of trains.
