Remarks & Notes |
Newcastle's castle was built in the 12th century and all that remains now is the gatehouse and the Keep. The top of the keep is a great place to watch trains and was even more so in the 1950's and 60's when steam ruled and the trackwork was infinitely more complex than it is today. Hordes of schoolboys would pass their weekends and holidays at this spot, noting the numbers of the locomotives that went through the station. Times have changed but the station remains busy and here all 6 platforms are in use as a train for Edinburgh heads north |
