Southern Pacific SD40E 7342 is turned on the turntable in San Luis Obispo, California, in preparation for the next day's service as a helper on the steam-powered New Orleans Daylight excursion. Someone at SP selected 7342 for this duty because, as one of the two engines painted in an experimental version of the Daylight scheme, it will look very nice when paired with Daylight painted 4-8-4 4449. Built by EMD in April 1966 as SP SD40 8470, this engine was rebuilt to an SD40E (or SD40R, depending upon the source) in December 1980.
Not
just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
